There is a strong relationship between neck and temporomandibular dysfunction, with approximately 70% of individuals with Temporomandibular Disorders (TMDs) experiencing neck pain. The structure and function of the joints, musculature, and fascia and the neural control of the head, neck, and jaw must work in concert to ensure appropriate craniocervical and mandibular function.  Unfortunately, the evaluation and treatment of the front (masticatory system) and back (sub-cranial and cervico-thoracic spines) halves of the head are often considered and applied in isolation in clinical care without consideration of the role of myofascial tissue, central sensitization, and referred pain that can address the persistent pain individuals with TMDs often experience.

The purpose of this course is to provide an anatomical, neurophysiological, and biomechanical background to the sub-cranial and cervico-thoracic spine connection that can be contributing factors to the development of and persistence of pain in TMDs.  Emphasis will be placed on collaborative care to ensure optimal care for those experiencing TMD. A systematic approach to evaluating the masticatory system and spine linked through the myofascial system will be covered. Intervention strategies will be presented to unite the temporomandibular region with the sub-cranial and cervico-thoracic spines to extend appropriate conservative management for individuals with TMDs.
